I finally got a response to one of my dog emails on Thursday, almost two days after I sent the message. The owner’s email said Bella (that’s the dog’s name) was going to go to one home, but they decided her apartment wouldn’t be a good place for her, so she was available again. Incidentally, Bella was my first choice – a chocolate Lab mix with slightly bigger ears than a purebred but an otherwise very Lab-like face. She is fully trained, spayed at 6 months, up to date on shots, completely healthy, no allergies to speak of, two years old, about 60 lbs, and has the sweetest face you’ve ever seen. I loved her from her picture, and I loved her even more after speaking to her current owner last night. A loved dog is a good dog, and I can tell this dog is loved – sometimes life circumstances make dog ownership less than ideal, and her owner sounded like I would have sounded in the same situation.
I’m going to meet Bella today, or rather this evening – she is about an hour to my north, and a friend is kindly chauffeuring my non-licensed self all the way up there and back. There’s a lot still up in the air, like whether Bella and I will click (I already love her, so I’ll be pretty disappointed if we don’t), and whether I would get to take her today or Monday, when the owner will be in Seattle anyway. It unnerves me when things are unsettled, but it’s a good kind of unsettled – it’s exciting, because I’m about 90% sure she’ll be it. Maybe 95%. Anyway, with all this excitement, I woke up at 6:30 this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I basically had a protein bar and a few cups of coffee and have been cleaning like a maniac ever since. Seriously – I vacuumed the baseboards. I never do that. I probably should. They don’t stay super clean all by themselves.
I also went to Mud Bay and picked up some grain-free, high protein dog treats, so I can offer one to Bella when I meet her – I want her to associate me with good things, and dogs are very food-driven (like me!). Oh, and did I mention her birthday is a week before mine? How cute is that? We can have a joint birthday party! I’m going to be a crazy dog lady, it’s already starting.
I’ve also been thinking about names. Bella is a really cute name, but I worry that 1) I will be embarrassed at the dog park because I may appear to be a teenage girl obsessed with Twilight, and more importantly, 2) Bella is one of the most common dog names these days, especially for Labs. I wouldn’t want there to be fourteen other Bellas who come running when I call her. So, I was toying with Mocha (which my mom vetoed because her puppy Coco’s full name is Coco Mocha) or Sasha (because the Russian nickname for my full name, Alexandra, is Sasha, and my best friend thought it would be funny). My favorite chocolate Lab name is Godiva, but my mom and I already had a dog named Godiva who passed away a few years ago, so I thought it would be wrong somehow.
The original Godiva, lookin’ like a movie star.
My mom suggested I name her Godiva anyway – Godiva II. The first Godiva wasn’t my dog, she was the family dog. I’m toying with the idea. I really do love the name, and it would be nice to have another Diva-Girl running around.
I’m going to go look up dog-friendly restaurants in Seattle now, just in case I get to take her home tonight and my friend wants to go to dinner (I’m going to offer, since she’s nice enough to drive me and let the dog ride in her relatively new car). Wish me luck, and send happy dog-related thoughts!
